Welcome to the world’s first-ever translational research hospital.
The Shirley Ryan AbilityLab is the leading rehabilitation destination for adults and children with the most severe, complex conditions — from traumatic brain and spinal cord injury to stroke, amputation and cancer. Our goal is to increase the likelihood that promising research ideas will be converted into viable medical treatments.
We have physically embedded physicians, scientists, therapists and patients together 24/7 — fundamentally altering the process of scientific inquiry and allowing for greater “translation” of research into care immediately.
Our new hospital opened in March 2017 and, at 1.2 million square feet, is the largest standalone rehabilitation hospital in the U.S. including:
*5 translational ability labs — Think + Speak Lab; Legs + Walking Lab; Arms + Hands Lab; Strength + Endurance Lab; and Pediatric Lab — applied research and therapeutic spaces integrating patients into the process of discovery and innovation.
*5 Innovation Centers providing the best medical care and state-of-the art equipment for patients: Brain; Spinal Cord; Nerve, Muscle & Bone; Cancer; and Pediatric.
*MRI and CT services in-house (avoiding external referrals).
*A conference center with two large, open auditoriums that can facilitate meetings for 2 to 250. Each auditorium can split into 3 smaller rooms.
The Shirley Ryan AbilityLab expands and accelerates leadership in the field that began at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago in 1953 — our care and research have led to the designation as the “No. 1 Rehabilitation Hospital in America” by U.S. News & World Report every year since 1991.
